SUMMARY:Multi-national Collaboration and Conservation of Humpback Whales with the Caribbean Humpback Acoustic Monitoring Programme (CHAMP)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Heather Heenehan\nUniversity of New England \nIn September 2016\, the West Indies distinct population segment (DPS) of humpback whales  (Megaptera  novaeangliae)  was  delisted  under  the  US  Endangered  Species  Act. In response to these changes in humpback status and evidence supporting more than one breeding population in the West Indies\, the Caribbean Humpback Acoustic Monitoring  Programme  (CHAMP)  was  formed.  CHAMP  leverages  and  expands  networks already established in the Caribbean to promote and enhance collaborative  work  on  the  biology  of  humpback  whales  and  establish  a  robust  monitoring program\, focusing first on passive acoustic monitoring. With the significant  contributions  of  a  large  network  of  partners  and  collaborators\,  nine  passive acoustic recording devices were deployed between December 2016 and June 2017. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Caitlin McDonough MacKenzie\nUniversity of Maine \nCaitlin McDonough MacKenzie is a David H. Smith postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute. Her research explores the paleoecology and historical ecology of alpine and subalpine plant communities in New England\, where she works with stakeholders to inform conservation management. She received an MS from the University of Vermont and a PhD from Boston University while partnering with the Appalachian Mountain Club and Acadia National Park respectively to pursue research on the ecological effects of climate change on plant communities. SUMMARY:Rapid Warming and Salinity Changes in the Gulf of Maine Alter Surface Ocean Carbonate Parameters and Hide Ocean Acidification
DESCRIPTION:The School of Marine Sciences presents \nDr. Joseph Salisbury\nUniversity of New Hampshire \nA  profound  warming  event  in  the  Gulf  of  Maine  (GOM)  during the  last  decade  has  caused sea surface temperatures (SST) to rise to levels 2 solubility and\, in turn\, the status  of  the  sea  surface  carbonate  system.  When  combined  with the concomitant  increase in sea surface salinity and assumed rapid equilibration of carbon dioxide across the air sea interface\, thermodynamic forcing partially mitigated the effects of ocean  acidification  (OA)  for  pH\,  while  raising  the saturation  index  of  aragonite  (WAR) by an average of 0.14 units. Although the recent event is categorically extreme\, we find that carbonate system parameters also respond to interannual to sub-­‐decadal  variability  in temperature  and  salinity\,  and  that  such  phenomena  can  mask the expression of OA caused by increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide. An analysis  of  a  34-­‐year salinity  and  SST  time  series  (1981-­‐2014)  shows  instances  of  decadal scale anomalies in temperature and salinity that perturb the carbonate system  to  an extent  greater  than  that  expected  from  OA.  Because  such  conditions  are not uncommon in our time series\, it is critical to understand processes controlling the  carbonate  system  and  how  ecosystems  with  calcifying  organisms  respond to its rapidly changing conditions.
