SUMMARY:Multinational Collaboration and Conservation of Humpback Whales with the Caribbean Humpback Acoustic Monitoring Programme (CHAMP)
DESCRIPTION:The School of Marine Sciences presents \nDr. Heather Heenehan\nUniversity of New England\n \nPolycom availability with Darling Marine Center\, Gulf of Maine Research Institute\, and Bigelow Laboratories \nHost: Kristina Cammen \nAll School of Marine Science seminars are in Room 354\, Aubert Hall at 11:00 a.m. on Fridays. Refreshments are available at 10:45 a.m. A voluntary brown bag lunch involving the speaker will follow the seminar to generate interdisciplinary discussions around the presented marine science topic. \nFor more information\, contact Susan Brawley at brawley@maine.edu.

SUMMARY:Multi-national Collaboration and Conservation of Humpback Whales with the Caribbean Humpback Acoustic Monitoring Programme (CHAMP)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Heather Heenehan\nUniversity of New England \nIn September 2016\, the West Indies distinct population segment (DPS) of humpback whales  (Megaptera  novaeangliae)  was  delisted  under  the  US  Endangered  Species  Act. In response to these changes in humpback status and evidence supporting more than one breeding population in the West Indies\, the Caribbean Humpback Acoustic Monitoring  Programme  (CHAMP)  was  formed.  CHAMP  leverages  and  expands  networks already established in the Caribbean to promote and enhance collaborative  work  on  the  biology  of  humpback  whales  and  establish  a  robust  monitoring program\, focusing first on passive acoustic monitoring. With the significant  contributions  of  a  large  network  of  partners  and  collaborators\,  nine  passive acoustic recording devices were deployed between December 2016 and June 2017. By placing passive acoustic recorders throughout the Caribbean\, we are able to monitor humpback whale distribution\, assess seasonal differences in arrival and departure of the whales\, and quantify the soundscape of these islands. \nPolycom availability with Darling Marine Center\, Gulf of Maine Research Institute\, and Bigelow Laboratories \nHost: Kristina Cammen (kristina.cammen@maine.edu)

SUMMARY:Climate change\, species loss\, and spring phenology in and around Acadia National Park\, Maine
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Caitlin McDonough MacKenzie\nUniversity of Maine \nCaitlin McDonough MacKenzie is a David H. Smith postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute. Her research explores the paleoecology and historical ecology of alpine and subalpine plant communities in New England\, where she works with stakeholders to inform conservation management. She received an MS from the University of Vermont and a PhD from Boston University while partnering with the Appalachian Mountain Club and Acadia National Park respectively to pursue research on the ecological effects of climate change on plant communities. She is broadly interested in underutilized sources of historical ecological data\, the potential for citizen science in climate change research\, and the intersection of science and policy. \nFor information : Dr. Jacquelyn Gill\, jacquelyn.gill@maine.edu\nSponsored by the School of Biology & Ecology as part of the 2017 Fall Seminar Series
