SUMMARY:Right Whale Conservation and the Management of the American Lobster Fishery
DESCRIPTION:The School of Marine Sciences presents \nDr. Erin Summers\nDirector\, Division of Biological Monitoring\nMaine Department of Marine Resources \nThe  North  Atlantic  right  whale  experienced  an  unprecedented  mortality  event  in  2017  with  the  loss  of  3%  of  the  population through entanglements in fixed fishing gear and ship strikes. New studies are confirming that this endangered population  has  been  in  decline  since  2010\,  which  is  perpetuated  by  low  birth  rates\,  declining  health  indices\,  and  increasing rates of serious injuries and mortalities due to entanglements. I will discuss the state of the right whale population  and  how  this  has  led  to  the  current  regulatory  climate.  There  will  be  an  overview  of  current  conservation  measures being vetted by the advisory body\, the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Team\, how these will affect fisheries like the American lobster fishery\, and the long term goals for right whale recovery. \nHost: Kristina Cammen \nPolycom availability with Darling Marine Center\, Gulf of Maine Research Institute\, and Bigelow Laboratories

SUMMARY:Tracking organismal response to global change with mitochondria
DESCRIPTION:The School of Biology and Ecology presents \nDr. Nishad Jayasundara\nUMaine School of Marine Sciences \nDr. Jayasundara’s research broadly focuses on investigating physiological and biochemical traits underlying organismal adaptation to their habitat and how these traits are altered in response to changes in physical and chemical environmental factors. He examines the role of mitochondria in stress responses and the potential to use mitochondrial function and mitochondrial DNA as indicators and predictors of organismal capacity to maintain fitness in rapidly changing environments. His ongoing work focuses on species of teleost fish from the Gulf of Maine to the Indian Ocean. The overall goal of this work is to better understand how organisms respond to ongoing and predicted changes in the environment due to climate change and chemical pollution and to develop tools to use native fish species as markers of environmental health. \n  \nFor information : Dr. Danielle Levesque\, danielle.l.levesque@maine.edu\, 1-2961 Sponsored by the School of Biology & Ecology as part of the 2018 Spring Seminar Series

SUMMARY:Improvement of the Physical and Mechanical Properties of Dry-Spun Cellulose Nanofibril Filaments: Effect of Substrate
DESCRIPTION:Nutting Hall\, Room 213\nThe School of Forest Resources presents a Graduate Seminar in Wood Science\nShokoofeh Ghasemi\nPhD Candidate of Renewable Nanomaterials\n\nUsing Cellulose Nanofibrils (CNF) for the production of filaments is a comparatively new application for CNF which can broaden nanocellulose applications in many ways. Nanocellulose filaments can be used to make textiles and thus can be used in the composite structures as well as high-tech textile and clothing applications. Different methods are proposed for spinning of filaments from cellulose nanofibrils which are mostly under two categories of dry-spinning and wet-spinning. In the dry-spinning method\, the substrate will have significant influence on the properties of the filament as the as-spun filament will be firstly in contact with the substrate. In this work\, the influence of different substrates on the properties of the nanocellulose filament is studied. Teflon tape\, Teflon film and glass are used for this study and the influence of adding oil to decrease surface friction on the surface properties of the substrate were studied. The relationships between surface properties and the cross-sectional form of the filaments are evaluated.

SUMMARY:Integrating Genetics and Physiology to Gain Insights Into Species Responses to Environmental Change
DESCRIPTION:The School of Marine Sciences presents \nDr. Brent L. Lockwood\nAssistant Professor\, Dept. of Biology\nUniversity of Vermont \nAbiotic and biotic factors create and maintain diversity\, at multiple levels of biological organization. The biosphere can be a challenging place in which to live because physiological processes are perturbed by changes in the environment. But species have evolved to cope with environmental change. What are the coping mechanisms\, and can they be modified further to keep pace with climate change? In the broader context of ecological communities\, how might changes in the environment influence competitive interactions among species? By integrating approaches in developmental biology\, genetics\, genomics and biochemistry\, we can begin to connect molecular processes to whole-organism phenotypes in an ecological context. Hereby\, organismal biology can help to us understand how species are responding to climate change.
