SUMMARY:Arsenic Compounds in the Marine and Terrestrial Environment: From Analytical Considerations to Implications for Human Health.
DESCRIPTION:The School of Marine Sciences and Department and Molecular and Biomedical Sciences present \nDr. Brian Jackson\nDartmouth University \nArsenic is a non-essential element and\, at elevated concentrations\, the inorganic forms of arsenic are toxic to life. However\, arsenic also has a rich biochemistry and approaching 100 organo-arsenic compounds\, including arseno-sugars and arseno-lipids\, have been identified in marine and terrestrial life. Synthetic arsenic-based antibiotics have been used in livestock farming and inorganic and simple methylated arsenic compounds have been widely used as pesticides and herbicides on US agricultural soils. In this talk\, the range of arsenic compounds in nature will be surveyed and the analytical methods for determining the individual species will be described. The range of arsenic species encountered in food\, their concentration and the potential effects on human health will be discussed. \nHosts: Susan Brawley and Julie Gosse \nFor more information\, contact Susan Brawley at brawley@maine.edu.

SUMMARY:Sustainability Success Through Community Conservation.
DESCRIPTION:The School of Marine Sciences presents \nDr. Anthony Charles\nSt. Mary’s University \nPlace-based communities the world over face local environmental threats. In response\, many communities are acting as stewards of their local environments and resources\, undertaking conservation initiatives that help secure local livelihoods\, and contribute to larger-scale environmental improvement. However\, the conservation successes of local communities tend to be little known and receive little practical and policy support from governments. This has been the case despite the fact that the historical evolution of conservation and sustainability thinking reinforces the role of local-level communities. Given this motivation\, and the successes already achieved\, how can we increase the focus in conservation policy and practice on local communities\, and ensure an increased role for communities in conservation governance? This presentation explores that question\, examining the community role in conservation and sustainability\, as well as policy responses. \nAnthony (Tony) Charles is a professor at Saint Mary’s University. His research focuses on fisheries\, oceans and coasts\, including studies of integrated ocean management\, small-scale fisheries\, community-based management\, climate impacts and adaptation\, sustainability of fisheries and coasts\, and human dimensions of ecosystem-based management and marine protected areas. He leads the Community Conservation Research Network\, a global initiative that studies and supports local communities engaging in conservation for sustainable livelihoods. Dr. Charles is a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation\, a member of the Fisheries Expert Group in IUCN’s Commission on Ecosystem Management\, and an advisor to organizations including the UN Food and Agriculture Organization\, the OECD\, and the Canadian government. \nVideo conferencing is available. Please contact Carol Hamel (carol.hamel@maine.edu) for more information. \nHost: Josh Stoll \nAll School of Marine Science seminars are in Room 354\, Aubert Hall at 11:00 a.m. on Fridays. Refreshments are available at 10:45 a.m. A voluntary brown bag lunch involving the speaker will follow the seminar to generate interdisciplinary discussions around the presented marine science topic. \nFor more information\, contact Susan Brawley at brawley@maine.edu.

SUMMARY:The role of host trait variation in parasite diversification: Testing model predictions for the goldenrod-insect community
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Chandra Moffat\nAgriculture and Agri-Food Canada \n\n\nDr. Chandra Moffat’s research focuses on the evolutionary ecology of plant-herbivore interactions. She uses combination of field ecology\, experiments\, modelling and molecular biology to test hypotheses regarding the structuring of species interactions in both basic and applied systems. Chandra is particularly interested in the cause and consequences of local adaptation and novel species interactions. In her talk\, Chandra will discuss her PhD research on the role host plant trait variation may play in driving divergence of herbivorous insects. Her work suggests that adaptation to within-niche variation may facilitate colonization of novel niches and play a role in driving ecological speciation.\n\n\nFor information : Dr. Andrei Alyokhin\, alyokhin@maine.edu\, 1-2551\nSponsored by the School of Biology & Ecology as part of the 2017 Fall Seminar Series
