SUMMARY:Species Invasions and Rapid Adaptation in the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Carolyn Tepolt\nAssistant Scientist – Biology\nWoods Hole Oceanographic Institute \nBiological invasions are agents of significant and ongoing global environmental change\, and can have devastating ecological and economic consequences. They also offer a rare opportunity to study rapid adaptation in nature. Invasive species\, by definition\, are highly adept at surviving and thriving in novel environments. I integrate ecology\, physiology\, and genomics to explore the dynamics of rapid adaptation in marine systems using species invasions as natural experiments. In the invasive European green crab\, temperature appears to have shaped physiology and genomics on both long and short time scales. In the white-fingered mud crab\, an invasive body-snatching parasite impacts host crab populations very differently depending on their co-evolutionary history. \nPolycom availability with Darling Marine Center\, Gulf of Maine Research Institute\, and Bigelow Laboratories \nHost: Nishad Jayasundara

SUMMARY:The Intersection of Science\, Policy\, and Activism
DESCRIPTION:The School of Biology and Ecology presents \nLeehi Yona\nYale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies \nLeehi Yona is a MESc candidate at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. She studies ways to integrate climate science and policy\, and is examining greenhouse gas inventories from ecological and political science perspectives. Specifically\, she researches the way soil carbon stocks in forests are measured by scientists and understood by policymakers. She is passionate about science communication and the science-policy interface and has written nearly 100 opinion pieces on climate policy. She was named Canada’s Top Environmentalist Under 25. \nAll are welcome! Refreshments served at 3:00 PM \nFor information: Zach Wood\, zachary.t.wood@maine.edu\nCo-sponsored by SBE GO and the School of Biology & Ecology as part of the 2018 Spring Seminar Series
