SUMMARY:Improvement of the Physical and Mechanical Properties of Dry-Spun Cellulose Nanofibril Filaments: Effect of Substrate
DESCRIPTION:Nutting Hall\, Room 213\nThe School of Forest Resources presents a Graduate Seminar in Wood Science\nShokoofeh Ghasemi\nPhD Candidate of Renewable Nanomaterials\n\nUsing Cellulose Nanofibrils (CNF) for the production of filaments is a comparatively new application for CNF which can broaden nanocellulose applications in many ways. Nanocellulose filaments can be used to make textiles and thus can be used in the composite structures as well as high-tech textile and clothing applications. Different methods are proposed for spinning of filaments from cellulose nanofibrils which are mostly under two categories of dry-spinning and wet-spinning. In the dry-spinning method\, the substrate will have significant influence on the properties of the filament as the as-spun filament will be firstly in contact with the substrate. In this work\, the influence of different substrates on the properties of the nanocellulose filament is studied. Teflon tape\, Teflon film and glass are used for this study and the influence of adding oil to decrease surface friction on the surface properties of the substrate were studied. The relationships between surface properties and the cross-sectional form of the filaments are evaluated.

SUMMARY:Integrating Genetics and Physiology to Gain Insights Into Species Responses to Environmental Change
DESCRIPTION:The School of Marine Sciences presents \nDr. Brent L. Lockwood\nAssistant Professor\, Dept. of Biology\nUniversity of Vermont \nAbiotic and biotic factors create and maintain diversity\, at multiple levels of biological organization. The biosphere can be a challenging place in which to live because physiological processes are perturbed by changes in the environment. But species have evolved to cope with environmental change. What are the coping mechanisms\, and can they be modified further to keep pace with climate change? In the broader context of ecological communities\, how might changes in the environment influence competitive interactions among species? By integrating approaches in developmental biology\, genetics\, genomics and biochemistry\, we can begin to connect molecular processes to whole-organism phenotypes in an ecological context. Hereby\, organismal biology can help to us understand how species are responding to climate change.
