SUMMARY:Forestry in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:The School of Forest Resources presents its 2018 Distinguished Alumnus\n\n\nDan Christensen\nDirector\, Hancock Natural Resource Group\nIndustrial forestry has evolved from being a raw material supply for mills to having to compete in the broader global capital markets. What are the macro drivers? Who currently owns the industrial forests? Sustainability – why is this important? Renewable energy – can forestry impact? Financial returns – how is forestry doing? The world is ever changing and forestry needs to continually adapt. So what does the future hold for forestry? \nDan retired at the end of 2015 after a 38 year career in the natural resource industry. He was the President & CEO since 2004 of the Hancock Natural Resource Group (HNRG) out of Boston\, Mass. with overall responsibility for the Hancock Timber Resource Group (HTRG)\, Hancock Agricultural Investment Group (HAIG) and Hancock Renewable Energy Group (HREG). Dan was past Chairman of John Hancock Natural Resource Corp\, Hancock Forest Management\, Hancock Farmland Services\, Farmland Management Services\, Hancock Forest Management New Zealand\, Hancock Natural Resource Group and Hancock Natural Resource Group Australasia. Dan also was a founding member and previously served on the Board of National Alliance of Forest Owners (NAFO)  and continues to serve on the Board of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI).  Dan graduated from the University of Maine with a BS degree in Forest Engineering in 1977.  He worked as a forester for Diamond International Corporation and Diamond Occidental Forest in Old Town\, Maine until joining the Hancock Timber Resource Group in Boston MA in 1992.
