UPI reports on Waring’s theory of sustainability

United Press International wrote about University of Maine economist Timothy Waring’s work to develop a theory of sustainability, including which combination of sociopolitical factors and institutions are most likely to encourage sustainable resource management. Cooperation within social groups may be key, Waring says. “We found that sustainable use of resources emerged more when societies were broken up into multiple groups, like states in the United States, or countries in Europe,” said the associate professor in the School of Economics and the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions.
